Energos- Go Efficient

in

Conserving energy is as important as its generation. One of the most important forms of energy that we interact in every moment of our lives is electrical energy. If you can design a method that can reduce wastage of electricity in our day-to-day life, APOGEE’10 is the perfect place to show your talent...

Problem Statement

Consider a place like a classroom or a hostel or a home etc. where many electrical appliances are being used daily. Some part of the electrical energy consumed is wasted, be it due to inherent losses or human negligence (say, not switching the lights or fans off before leaving the room!).

The participants are supposed to devise a method that can either reduce these wastages or utilize these losses (be it heat loss or mechanical loss) or both. It is important to keep in mind that the loss from a system can be a useful input for another productive system. The participants would be required to present the functional implementation of their ideas.

In addition to this, participants can devise a system that can measure the power consumed by each appliance in the home. This data thus collected should be transferred to a computer which allows continuous monitoring of the total electricity consumed by the user.

Rules

• A team may consist of utmost four members.
• An individual cannot participate in more than one team.

Abstract Submission

The participants are required to submit an abstract latest by 28th Feb, 2010 to shanmohan[AT]bits-apogee.org along with your team details.

The abstract should contain following details:

• Team name
• Team members (along with contact no.s)
• Contact address
• Principles and Methods used (please include all the details of the components used)

Judging Criteria

• The participants can design any number of modules for any number of devices. For instance, a team can come up with a design to reduce the electricity consumed by a water heater and another different design to utilise heat losses in an electric bulb, each design is considered as a single module.
• However, the participants should not present multiple designs for the same device. For example, if a team presents two different ways to reduce electricity consumed by a water heater, it is considered as a single module. The design that is awarded maximum points is considered for final points.
• Different modules by the same team, working on the same principle, are considered as one module only.
• Participants should have at least one energy conservation module. Designing the power monitoring system alone will not fetch any credit.
• There can only be a single power module for power measurement.

Credits

a. Reducing energy consumption/wastage - 1000 points (for each module) which is split into:

  1. 1. Innovation 300 points
  2. 2. Practical feasibility 300 points

  3. 3. Cost-effectiveness* 400 points

• The points awarded = [{(Total money saved in one year after installing the device) / (Installation Cost)} * 400]

Also, the participants should show the details of amount of energy saved by each module.

b.Additional points will be awarded for power measuring and monitoring system - 300 points

  1. 1. Power measurement** 100 points
  2. 2. Interfacing the various components with computer** 200 points

(** points awarded to the participants depend on the innovation, ease of usage, ease of installation, power requirements of the device designed)

The team scoring the maximum cumulative points will be declared winner.
